Verizon outs Mobile Email 4.0: true push and Exchange support for dumbphones
We imagine that the lion's share of people that need Exchange email access are getting it on a BlackBerry or some other manner of smartphone, but Verizon's covering all its bases here today with the release of Mobile Email 4.0, a dumbphone-compatible release that lets even some of the cheapest handsets in Big Red's lineup (the Octane , Cosmos Touch , and Zeal are specifically called out) in on the corporate action. Besides Exchange support, the release includes a "true push experience," an all-new UI, and Outlook calendar synchronization -- the perfect companion to Exchange email compatibility. It's available now for free if you're on a data plan of at least $15 a month, or for $5 a month with a pay-as-you-go data option.

Nokia C7 has NFC capability, won’t say what it’s for — yet
We like us a little intrigue in our handsets, and we'd say this definitely qualifies: Nokia has apparently quietly slipped NFC circuitry into its just-launched C7 without bothering to mention it in any of the phone's literature. What does that mean? Well, Nokia's not saying, curiously -- but the company has experimented with using NFC for a variety of things over the years, and cashless transactions and contact information exchange are obviously two of the biggies

Apple patches iOS 4 Exchange issue
It hasn't gotten quite the attention of the iPhone 4's antenna problems or its proximity sensor troubles , but iOS 4 has caused some heartbreak for corporate users who connect to Exchange servers -- checking mail or syncing contact and calendars can stall out interminably, with no option but to restart and try again. We've definitely had this problem ourselves, but happily Apple's right on the case with this one -- iOS 4 users who need to get their Exchange on can download an updated configuration file that seems to make things better. The new settings don't seem to do much other than increase iOS 4's idle timeout, but if it works, it works -- and in our limited testing things appear to be going swimmingly

Samsung, T-Mobile announce :), Gravity 3, and Gravity T — yes, we said :)
After bizarre names like Rant , Corby , and Clubby , it appears the phone industry has finally buckled into a state of chaos -- a state where words no longer exist at all. Samsung has brought a new trio of midrange text-centric devices to T-Mobile today, starting on the left with the :) (we're told "Smiley" is an acceptable substitute, thank goodness) that features a portrait QWERTY slide, Exchange support, and a 1.3 megapixel camera; it goes for just $19.99 on contract

Android 2.2 coming to the full myTouch 3G range
TmoNews has it on good authority that the entire line of myTouch 3G devices -- the original , the 3.5mm jack update , and the Slide -- will get upgraded with Android 2.2 , as evidenced by a fascinating shot of a pamphlet the site has posted. Users of the older devices will also get the same Genius Button functionality that was just rolled out on the Slide, along with the updated Faves app and full Microsoft Exchange support, breathing new life into a phone that first saw life as the Magic well over a year ago

NASDAQ and CEA announce Smartphone Index
The NASDAQ isn't exactly our usual beat here at Engadget, but it's not every day that a consumer electronics market segment gets elevated to the status of having its own index, which is what the stock exchange has now done with a little help from the Consumer Electronics Association . They've teamed up for the NASDAQ OMX CEA Smartphone Index, which consists of 84 companies that are involved in one way or another with the "building, design and distribution of handsets, hardware, software, and mobile networks associated with the development, sale and usage of smartphones." We're having a bit of trouble tracking down the complete list of companies included in the index, but it does apparently have the usual suspects like Apple, Google and RIM, and it has started out with a valuation 250.00

Windows Phone 7 Series targeted at 38 year-old ‘life maximizers’
Here's a fun tidbit we just learned from Microsoft's Joe Belfiore: in order to focus Windows Phone 7 Series on the idea of best serving end users, the team actually created two fictional targets consumers named "Miles" and "Anna," a pair of married 38-year old "life maximizers" who demand the most from their devices. Yes, it's a little strange and hilariously specific on the surface -- Anna just scaled back her PR job to part-time so she can take care of the kids! Miles like to take pictures and use Facebook to share them with his parents in Europe! -- but it makes a certain amount of sense: Microsoft says it's trying to create a device that appeals to someone with both a work Exchange account and personal Gmail account, someone who needs to get work done but also wants to play 3D games, and it thinks that if Miles and Anna are happy, chances are a lot of other customer segments will satisfied as well.
