BlackBerry 8130 vs. BlackBerry 9100… fight!
Some of us at Engadget HQ won't ever be sold on the merits of SureType over good, old-fashioned QWERTY, but there's clearly a market for it -- RIM's BlackBerry Pearl series almost singlehandedly catapulted Waterloo into the consumer market, after all, and the upcoming 9100 looks to refine the formula to a crisp, golden brown perfection. Here, we've got one of the originals -- the 8130 -- beaming proudly next to its offspring, and RIM seems to have done a commendable job updating the package in all the right ways (optical trackpad, Bold 9700-esque design elements) while carrying over most of what the old model great.

TeliaSonera prices LTE service, offers free modem upgrade next year
It's pretty easy to fall far enough into the 4G mania trap that you lose sight of the important stuff -- like, say, how much cash you're going to be shedding every month for the delightful privilege of delivering 10Mbps-plus speeds straight to your lappie. Sweden's TeliaSonera -- which just launched service in Oslo and its home turf in Stockholm -- has revealed that users will be paying ridiculously low fees to get 'em to sign up before bumping rates mid-contract, a tactic stolen right out of Comcast's playbook

O2, Huawei team up for UK’s first trial LTE network
It kinda pales next to TeliaSonera's commercial launch , but give O2 some credit here -- they've just become the first carrier in the UK to trial "live" LTE services. Powered by Huawei gear on the back end, O2's hot new network hit a peak of 150Mbps on the downlink -- a speed we can't imagine seeing in real-world scenarios when 4G goes live on a large scale, but gives us hope nonetheless -- and is being used to demonstrate the kinds of things us lay folk will want to accomplish with LTE like video streaming, high-quality video calling, gaming, and torrenting New Moon (no, not really) at a company showcase. End users aren't able to sign up for the action just yet, but if you want to feel the power of LTE wash over your body like a cool wave, we might recommend heading to Slough -- O2's British headquarters and the location of the trial network.

Kindle for iPhone takes over the world, hits over 60 new countries
We all now know that Kindle is more than an e-book for Amazon -- it's an entire digital content platform with aims on world domination, which explains why the company has felt more than comfortable releasing software-based readers for other platforms . To that end, they've announced that Kindle for iPhone is now ready for download in over 60 additional countries, which probably overlaps as a pretty beefy subset of the list of countries to which the actual Kindle is shipping

Sierra Wireless’ dual form factor AirCard 504 for AT&T gets FCC’d
ExpressCard and PC Card slots both seem in danger of going the way of the dodo right now, but they're not dead yet -- far from it -- which means that carriers still have a vested interest in making sure there are data cards ready to suck $60 out of your wallet in exchange for 5GB of 3G data. So far, AT&T's only been selling a USB modem that's capable of taking advantage of its newly-christened 7.2Mbps markets, which means they've got to get a move on with those other form factors -- and by all accounts, it seems that's where this AirCard 504 comes into play

Sony Ericsson J10 coming to the GreenHeart range?
As a general rule of thumb, we'd say that whenever you hear rumors of an Android-powered candybar with a numeric keypad, it's probably going to end in tears. Such might be the case with Sony Ericsson's codename "Susan," a device originally thought to accompany the X10 in the company's brand-spanking-new Android line but now apparently thought to be a simpler QVGA dumbphone coming to market as the J10 with WiFi and a 5 megapixel cam with flash

Nokia hooks up with Chinese firm for localized software and services
RIM's not the only manufacturer making a new play to cozy up with China this week -- now it's Nokia making an announcement that it'll partner up with local firm New Alliance to develop software and services more appropriate for the local market. In a brief press release cut loose today, the companies have revealed that they'll form a new joint venture -- the clumsily-named Nokia Alliance Internet Services Company Limited -- to push specific pieces of Ovi fine-tuned for China while helping out local content creators and developers looking to bring their goods into the platform. The venture goes live next month with about 80 staffers involved; Nokia's pretty heavily invested in China as it is, so we're thinking this is a Nokia hooks up with Chinese firm for localized software and services originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 10:27:00 EST

Sprint wraps up iPCS acquisition, Nextel merger drama may finally be over
It's been eons since Sprint bought Nextel , but regional iDEN affiliate iPCS had managed to keep the fallout from the deal tied up in courts for years -- a side-effect of its claim that the merger violated Sprint's agreement to stay off iPCS' turf. After a few court losses, Sprint ultimately decided to bite the bullet and buy iPCS outright, and now, that deal's finalized to the tune of $831 million including Sprint's assumption of $405 million in debt. Though iPCS customers now become Sprint customers as a result of the acquisition, they'll effectively notice no difference -- the regional was already offering Sprint service exclusively under the Sprint brand, so this whole deal is little more than an escape hatch for the head office to tie off these legal wranglings once and for all.

LG Lotus successor LX610 seeks to look even stranger than the original
We've heard rumors in the past that Sprint is looking to replace its Lotus with an upgraded model, a testament to the fact that the bizarre mega-wide form factor must be doing relatively well at retail. And how, exactly, do you outdo a phone like the Lotus? One obvious answer is to add a huge display on the front, which is what the upcoming LX610 seems to be doing if the shots over on PhoneArena are legit
