We’d heard rumors that a new Zune was on the way, but here’s a spot of evidence that something’s actually up: Microsoft’s adding a senior mechanical engineer to help build “the next generation of portable entertainment and communication devices.” While the job listing in question is technically for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business, which oversees Windows Phone, it’s clear that some things have changed since the Entertainment & Devices shakeup: “We are the team that shipped the Zune HD,” the post reads. It appears that there’s a new group within Microsoft called the Portable Entertainment Group which isn’t afraid to design its own hardware and includes the Zune team, though whether that hardware be Zune, phone or something more obscure still remains to be seen.

If you examined the fairly impressive roster of Windows Phone 7 Xbox Live launch titles that Microsoft waved proudly in our face the other day, you might’ve noticed that EA is particularly absent from that glorious list. Well, the folks at Mobile Entertainment bothered to ask EA Mobile about that absence, and EA had this terse reply: “We are constantly evaluating new platforms and opportunities, but have nothing to announce right now.” Pretty eye opening, right? In absence of facts, there are all sorts of avenues for conjecture. EA could be holding out for a better carrot from Microsoft, checking to see how successful the platform will actually be, or just playing its titles close to its chest. Or maybe they’re just resting after a long round of Madden testing and binge potato chip eating. We’re not going to get all worked up about it right now: it’s not like we’re short on platforms right now suited to shepherding the hapless lives of our Sims.

Last we heard from Artificial Muscle, the company was trying to convince hospitals, cell phone manufacturers and more that its technology — a silicon film that expands and contracts with an applied voltage — would provide a real sense of touch to their cold, hard touchscreens. On at least three counts, it has succeeded. The San Jose Mercury News reports that two cell phone manufacturers are planning Artificial Muscle-based products in 2011, and that an “electronics entertainment product” will be released this Christmas. The company also plans to produce 1 million of the electronic actuators per month to anticipate further demand. While the Mercury News notes that Artificial Muscle’s product isn’t the holy grail of haptic feedback — the entire screen stiffens when pressed, not just the spot you touch — its adoption means the company may have set events in motion to ultimately reach that goal.

Ah, Las Vegas… we hardly knew ye! Okay, that’s categorically untrue — CTIA Wireless 2010 actually marks our third official visit to Sin City in as many months, which means it’s nothing short of a miracle that we’re not lying in a ditch somewhere in the sun-scorched outskirts of town, penniless and near death. As always, the show brought us a fair bit of mobile news; sure, Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G stole the show, but that’s just scratching the surface of the pocketable wizardry we saw this week.
