ARM and Globalfoundries partner up for 28nm Cortex-A9 SOCs, invite great expectations

This one slipped the net during the excitement that was MWC this year, but it's such a promising development that we have to give it its due attention. ARM and Globalfoundries have announced plans to start building new systems-on-chip using the latter's ultramodern 28nm high-k metal gate production process, with the resultant chips offering up to 40 percent greater computational power, 30 percent greater power efficiency, and a terrific 100 percent improvement in battery longevity relative to their current-gen siblings. Mass production of these Cortex-A9 -based units is expected in the second half of 2010, which means they should be among the very first chips off Globalfoundries' 28nm assembly line

Will the ultracapacitor mean increased fuel efficiency in america?

hybrids are costly, and they use batteries.

new ultracapacitors can rapidly store charge. . . energy and release it. . . . such systems could be a lot more efficient when compiled with a battery. . . one system in the news boasted a car with no use of fuel but the fast charging of an ultracapacitor.

If America REALLY wants to be free of all co2 emissions (which I don’t think causes global warming btw). . . . and also not be dependent on oil. .

Then what we would do is. . . . .

build a huge nexus of nuclear reactors. . . that charge ‘modules’. from all the cars with this system. . . which are basically ultracapacitors compiled with a battery.

When you need a charge up. . . (an ultracapacitor can be charged fairly fast). you go to a ‘gas station’ which has charged up modules, and which you replace. Battery gets you to places if you run out of charge in your ultracapacitor.

no need for fuel in cars. . . . then gas is used for such things as heating, etc.

Motorola will ‘broaden the scope’ of Blur, sell a phone through Google this year

Earnings calls tend to be about as exciting as a stale piece of white bread, but every once in a while something juicy falls through -- and morsels are filtering out of the earnings call that Motorola held this morning . Here are the biggies: We hope you like Blur , because it's not going anywhere. CEO Sanjay Jha says that "the majority of our new smartphone [sic] this year will feature" the platform, and that it'll "include enhancements to address the prosumer segment of the market." They're looking to rope in media (music, photos, and so on) the same way they did social networking, boost enterprise compatibility for white collar types that only have one phone, and improve network efficiency to ease up on battery drain
