Qi charger prototype from Sanyo and NTT DoCoMo seeks out, ruthlessly charges stuff
Wireless charging gear compatible with the Qi standard should be hitting shelves any minute now, but NTT DoCoMo's charging base at CEATEC has a completely unnecessary (and completely awesome) trick up its sleeve to set itself apart from the crowd. The prototype -- developed in concert with Sanyo and bearing the Eneloop brand -- gives you some visual indication that a compatible gadget has been detected by displaying a ring of blue LEDs that converges around the device to be charged once you set it down. It's a neat effect...

Motorola takes another shot at the iPhone 4, says Droid X is ‘no jacket required’
Well this is getting good . Motorola was one of the first to take a subtle swipe at Apple's iPhone 4 antenna dilemma with an ad saying you could hold the Droid X "any way you like," Apple came right back with a video purportedly showing the Droid X suffering similar attenuation issues when held in the right hand, and now Moto's responded with this cheeky ad that plays off Apple's free iPhone case solution by saying the Droid X can make calls "without a bulky phone jacket." Yeah, it's pretty good -- particularly because unlike most other phones, we haven't been able to death grip the Droid X with any noticeable effect on 3G reception. (Although, truth be told, we can drop the WiFi signal by a few bars pretty easily.) Either way, we're certainly enjoying this little slice of swagger from Moto -- check a larger version after the break

Droid X commercial reveals a few specs — if you look very, very closely
Verizon's got a teaser ad running for the upcoming Droid X now, but if you see it on TV and you don't have a DVR that can slow down the action, you're going to miss all the good stuff -- in fact, all you really see at full speed is a scary eye that slowly transforms into the lifeless, blood-red vision sensor of a killer robot.

Google cutting in Android carriers, manufacturers on ad revenue?
Free, ad-supported phones have long been a rumored endgame for Android, but the way that model ends up playing out may not happen the way everyone thought.

Sprint offering instant credits for phone trade-ins
Saying that it hopes to boost the practice of phone recycling (with customer conquests a welcome side effect, we're sure), Sprint is now expanding its Buyback Program to cover over 900 devices with an instant credit when you trade them in to any of over 1,000 participating corporate-owned retail locations. Naturally, Sprint isn't about to hand you a wad of cash for these things, but the credits -- ranging from $5 to over $300 depending on the model, apparently -- help cut the bottom line on your account balance, and you can take advantage of the service up to three times per active line every 12 months. Unfortunately, it might not be that great of a deal: in the press release, they specifically call out the Bold 9700 as having a $161.05 -- and considering you can flip a used, locked Bold 9700 on eBay for well over $300, this looks more like a new revenue stream for Sprint than anything else.

WHY I BOUGHT A PLAYSTATION 3
You know, to some, this may not seem like that big of a deal, but you look at the source by which its coming from, as well as the points that are made throughout the article. This could have a major influence on the gaming community. There is no other influence in the world more powerful than the media
Google Phones Using Android And Their Effect China Non Brand Cell Phones
Open source code means that Chinese manufactures will now have a way to create a smart phone OS that is truly suitable to be enjoyed worldwide and is legitimate at the same time (regarding the phone’s internal software by the way, not its outer casing or its GUI). The initial phone to embrace Google Android was the classic Sciphone Dream G2. Sciphone was already quite famous (infamous) for coming out with iPhone clones such as the i9 and the i93G. The G2 was their attempt at releasing a semi-legitmate phone. However, the developers didn’t have the means to run the full Android platform, so they put together a simulated version. . . hey, got to start somewhere. The G2 phone uses a custom made lightweight version of Android. This result is because the phone misses sufficient CPU speed (you need at least 64MB of NAND free to make Android run with any functionality and the G2 only has 32MB on board). This is just the beginning however. As new upgrades of the MTK line of chips become available (the most common chipset in Asia, and with today’s big deal being the MTK6235), CPU power and on board NAND will improve letting phone manufactures truly use the open source Google Android OS. And what’s the best part? All the ridiculous and great applications made for a Google Android phone will be accessible at a little piece of the cost of a famous smart phone, will be surely unlocked, and there won’t be worrisome shipping (customs) holdups as we risk now with the Windows Mobile phones. The outlook for smart phones in China appears bright indeed.
