Handy Light for iPhone’s dirty little secret: tethering (update)
You may ask yourself, why on earth would anyone pay 99 cents for an iPhone app whose sole purpose is to flash bright, solid colors? We certainly wouldn't recommend it, but Handy Light has a great little Easter egg that undoubtedly doesn't jive with the folks at Cupertino HQ. Like Nullriver's Netshare app before it, this little piece of software allows for SOCKS proxy tethering, without having to sign up for AT&T's tethering plan

Ericsson estimates mobile lines have hit 5 billion, gives shout out to China and India for the help
Ericsson -- one of the world's top-tier infrastructure suppliers for mobile networks -- has crunched some numbers recently, figuring the five billionth cellphone line came into existence last Wednesday, July 8, largely from major surges in uptake in emerging markets like China and India. Mobile broadband access (which we take to mean access to 3G speeds and beyond) still trails significantly at just 360 million in 2009, though they're predicting a cool 3.4 billion users by 2015

FaceTime video call works beautifully on airplane’s in-flight WiFi (video)
Yeah, seriously. While Aircell's Gogo in-flight WiFi service has been blocking VoIP calling services ( Skype being the most obvious example) from day one, it's apparently not throwing the same brick wall in the face of Apple's new standard

Ovi Store warmed over with fresh look, new features
Nokia's Ovi Store got a little more awesome this week thanks to a makeover that brought a handful of minor changes -- nothing Earth-shattering by any stretch, but in this app-centric mobile world we're now an inseparable part of, we figure that every little bit helps. Actually, they've made changes both to the mobile and desktop clients, with the mobile side focusing on better and easier access to details about apps that you're looking at buying; they've also switched from a three-star rating system to five stars based on user feedback
Windows Phone 7 Series will have themes… sort of
It's no TouchFLO or SPB Mobile Shell, but it turns out you will be able theme Windows Phone 7 Series ... a little. Although we've only ever seen the classy "dark" theme with the black background, Microsoft just demoed a "light" theme with dark text on a white background

Google Earth now available on Android 2.1
After a totally nonchalant, non-announcement type of showing by Erick Tseng at Eric Schmidt's MWC keynote last week (thanks to Phone Scoop for pointing that out), the Android version of Google Earth is now available in the Market for download to the Nexus One (and, in the future, "most" other devices running 2.1 or newer). Previously, it'd only been available as a mobile app on the iPhone -- a rare example of Google treating Apple's platform better than its own -- but with modern Android handsets getting extraordinarily speedy, it makes sense that they'd want to bring the graphics-intensive app home. It's not as useful as Google Maps in the strictest sense of the word, but with touch control (multitouch in particular), it's endlessly entertaining -- and assuming you've got an unlimited data plan and a few free megabytes of app storage space, it's probably a must-download

Is this the face of the iPhone 4G?
There's very little to go on at this point, just a series of photos posted to a forum by a device repair company, but if their suspicions are correct, this could be the front panel of the presumably upcoming "iPhone 4G." iResQ claims to have obtained the sample part from a "reputable source" that has provided genuine parts to it in the past, parts which iResQ uses for repairing products -- even if those products don't exist yet.

myTouch 3Gs with 3.5mm headphone jacks hit T-Mobile’s store, now with less Fender
No offense meant to Eric Clapton, but not everybody wants a faux wood phone . And yet, it seems like there are many folks in this subset scattered across this fruited plain who'd like a real 3.5mm headphone jack on their phone, and for those crazy people there's at last the T-Mobile myTouch 3G to suit them.

The XMB has some serious organisation issues
Let me start by saying I'm a huge fan of the XMB, its sleek and functional, however in terms of organisation it is somewhat lacking.
