Windows Phone 7′s Marketplace grows faster than Android did at launch, doesn’t mean much

An analyst note released by research firm IDC yesterday points out that in the nearly two months since Windows Phone 7's retail release, the Windows Marketplace has swelled to 4,000 applications -- a number that the Android Market took five months to reach. That's impressive, no doubt, and the analyst behind the numbers notes that he "would not be surprised if Microsoft had the third largest app portfolio in the industry by the middle of next year." Now granted, hitting number three would take very little effort on Microsoft's part -- they'd just have to beat webOS, BlackBerry OS, and Symbian, none of which have sparked iOS- or Android-like levels of developer interest. So beyond that, what does the growth mean?

Samsung i9100 is the dual-core Galaxy 2, sequel to the Galaxy S?

Along with a Sony Ericsson Anzu , the James Bond of cellphones -- alias Eldar Murtazin -- claims to be playing with a Samsung GT-i9100 right now, calling it the "Galaxy 2" and saying it's "so technically advanced" thanks in part to a dual-core processor. It seems like a long shot that this would be the Cortex-A9-based Orion since chips and development boards are just now being sampled -- but considering how far in advance Murtazin tends to score phones, we can't rule anything out. One possible scenario is that the i9100 could be something akin to a TouchWiz -skinned version of the upcoming Nexus S , much as HTC's Desire was essentially a Sense -skinned version of the Nexus One .

LG Optimus 7 review

If last night's cameo showing off the official Twitter client for Windows Phone 7 wasn't enough of a hint, yes, we've gotten our hands on LG's Optimus 7 . This 3.8-inch machine will serve as LG's international WP7 ambassador while Americans get to grips with its QWERTY keyboard-equipped Quantum brother. As you'll no doubt be aware by now, the internal equipment is standardized around Microsoft's chassis spec, meaning a WVGA screen resolution, a 1GHz Snapdragon inside, and a 5 megapixel camera shooting 720p video at 24fps

Windows Phone 7 has tethering support, up to carriers whether to enable it

Sound familiar? For Windows Phone 7 , seems like Microsoft's taking an angle shared by both Apple and Google on a feature that enjoys a tenuous relationship at best with network operators, saying that data tethering will be available but it'll be up to carriers to decide whether to offer it

Bold 9650 spied running BlackBerry 6

RIM has already gone on record saying that the CDMA-equipped Bold 9650 has been mercifully tapped for a BlackBerry 6 upgrade "subject to carrier certifications in the months ahead," but where's the proof, RIM? How do we know you're not just spouting a bald-faced lie? Okay, okay, we don't doubt BlackBerry 6 is coming for the 9650 owners out there, but it's still nice to see a few shots of a Verizon-branded model with the new code in the wild

HTC Desire HD spotted in the wild with EVO-like form factor, Android 2.2 on board?

Well, would you look at that -- it's an Android 2.2 handset with a giant screen, HTC watermark and plenty of similarities to (though apparently no front-facing camera like ) the EVO 4G. Could this be the 4.3-inch, 1GHz HTC Desire HD

Mystery Nokia slider shows off proto-Symbian^3 one last time, commits cellular suicide (video)

We never did quite get the name of Nokia's prototype slider -- it certainly isn't the C7 , and it's apparently not the N9 -- but regardless of what you call our dearly departed, its journey is over . In what will no doubt be a fairly familiar tale to readers everywhere, TechnoBuffalo saw the phone remotely wiped right before their eyes, and Negri Electronics ( our original source ) says they've got private investigators breathing down their necks for the device. Stalwart to the bitter end, RM-626 gave one last performance before it dropped

Psion veteran Charles Davies leaves Nokia for TomTom

Charles Davies might not be as immediately recognizable as some other industry veterans, but anyone that's been following this business since the early days of PDAs will no doubt be familiar with his work. Davies was Psion 's very first employee way back in 1981, and stuck with the company all the way up until 2003 when he left to join Symbian, before moving on to Nokia with the rest of the Symbian staff a few years later. During that time, Davies helped Psion pioneer the use of flash memory and custom silicon in handhelds, served as Symbian's CTO, and helped Nokia head up the strategy and architecture team for its R&D division.

iOS 4 privacy policy updated: Apple can anonymously collect location data, you can take away iAds’ cookies

It may not be a big deal -- Android's done it for years -- but some will no doubt be interested to learn that Apple can monitor your GPS. In the latest revision of its privacy policy, presumably updated for iOS 4 , it revealed the company can anonymously track the "real-time geographic location" of devices and is free to share that data with "partners and licensees" as well.

Android 2.2 build FRF72 for Nexus One finally leaks

Its existence has been an on-again, off-again rumor for over a week now, but it looks like a new build of Android 2.2 Froyo for the Nexus One -- FRF72 -- is very real. It finally leaked in the past few hours, we've tested it on a Nexus One of our own, and as far as we can tell, it's straight-up legit. Get it if you dare -- it's up on Google's official servers right now, but if it's pulled, we've no doubt it'll be floating around on a bunch of mirrors ad nauseam.
