Could Microsoft actually embrace Windows Phone 7 hacking much like it's sort of done with Kinect hacking ? Not very likely, but it seems like the folks behind the ChevronWP7 unlocking tool are at least holding out some hope for that possibility. They've apparently had some "good faith" discussions with Microsoft's Director of Developer Experience for Windows Phone 7, Brandon Watson, and have decided to take the rather drastic step of pulling and ceasing all development on the tool in order to "fast-track" discussions about Microsoft officially embracing homebrew development.

Obviously, that may just be wishful thinking, but one thing is clear at least for the moment: it just got a bit harder to hack a Windows Phone 7 device.

We’ve already seen Epic Games and Id Software show off their respective game engines for iOS devices, but they’re only now finally giving folks a look at the first actual games that will use them. The first of those to roll out will apparently be Id’s Mutant Bash TV, which looks as impressive as the Rage demo promised (although that’s aided in part by being on rails), and will cost just $0.99 for the standard version or $1.99 for the Retina Display-enhanced version. Seemingly even more impressive than it, however, is Epic Games’ Infinity Blade, the game counterpart to the Unreal Engine 3-based “Epic Citadel” demo that was released back in September. While it may look like yet another God of War clone, it sounds like Epic has something quite a bit different in mind — the game’s creative director (of Shadow Complex fame, incidentally) recently described it as a mix of Karateka, Dragon’s Lair and Punch-Out. Head on past the break to check out the trailer, and hit up the link below for Touch Arcade’s preview of Mutant Bash TV (no video for it just yet, unfortunately).

Do you have your spooky stories ready for telling around the campfire? If you need a little help, take inspiration from this doozy told by Grant Castle, a Director at T-Mobile USA. It was submitted to the FCC way back in January and as a sort of written protest against “risky and unnecessary” net neutrality rules. He tells the tale of an undisclosed IM app that caused the network of an undisclosed city to go offline due to its too-frequent polling to check for updates. T-Mo engineers had to reach out to that app’s developer and get him to change its code, saving the company’s towers from the program’s thousands of users. There’s no telling which of the company’s many outages were caused by the app that wouldn’t die (shriek), but we’d sure hate to think that any members of the FCC are losing sleep over this saga of corporate woe.

It's unclear whether the dude was speaking out of turn, but an HTC regional director responsible for North Africa and the Middle East has gone on record with gulfnews saying on no uncertain terms that the company "will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets next month." Of course, that lines up nicely with just about everything we've been hearing lately -- not to mention the torrent of HTC-specific leaks we've seen -- and if true, it gives Microsoft a pretty generous buffer ahead of its holiday 2010 guidance for the platform's commercial release. He goes on to say that HTC will be releasing "around five more models by end of the year," though it's not clear how that mix will fall between Android, Windows Phone 7, and possibly even Brew MP ; the Desire HD and Desire Z seem like a nice way to close out the year on the Android side of things if you ask us, which leaves plenty of room for awesome WinPho hardware

We had a pretty good idea what Google and its AdMob division would think of Apple's new rules on outside advertising companies collecting analytics, but AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui has now spelled it out himself. In a post on the company's blog today, Hamoui says flat out that if the changes are enforced as written, they would "prohibit app developers from using AdMob and Google's advertising solutions on the iPhone." That, he says, would "not in the best interests of users or developers," noting that "in the history of technology and innovation, it's clear that competition delivers the best outcome," and that "artificial barriers to competition hurt users and developers and, in the long run, stall technological progress." As for what Google and AdMob are going to do about it, Hamoui would only say that they're going to be "speaking to Apple to express our concerns about the impact of these terms." We've also reached out to Greystripe for comment -- which would also seem to be affected by the new rules -- but have yet to hear back.

In a post on the company’s blog today, Hamoui says flat out that if the changes are enforced as written, they would “prohibit app developers from using AdMob and Google’s advertising solutions on the iPhone.” That, he says, would “not in the best interests of users or developers,” noting that “in the history of technology and innovation, it’s clear that competition delivers the best outcome,” and that “artificial barriers to competition hurt users and developers and, in the long run, stall technological progress.” As for what Google and AdMob are going to do about it, Hamoui would only say that they’re going to be “speaking to Apple to express our concerns about the impact of these terms.” We’ve also reached out to Greystripe for comment — which would also seem to be affected by the new rules — but have yet to hear back.

Update: We just got a statement from Adobe’s partner Greystripe, which says Apple’s new rules won’t prevent it from operating on the iPhone and iPad.

“We are pleased that Apple’s new terms and conditions explicitly allow Greystripe, an independent ad network, to operate on the iPhone and iPad platforms. It confirms the value of 3rd party ad networks in enabling developers to earn great revenue with their applications.”

Well, here's a bit of thunder theft for you. Nokia's N8 launch is still firmly wedged in Q3 2010 , but according to Symbian Foundation Executive Director Lee Williams, other handset makers are not going to hang around and wait for it to be the vanguard Symbian^3 device. This seems to be mostly on account of the new OS being pretty much ready for market right now, so whoever’s bringing the goods should be doing so in the very near future.

You know, we’re starting to wonder if Lady Gaga is secretly a gigantic nerd. She’s not only the Creative Director over at Polaroid, as well as having her own Beats by Dre headphones, but now… her likeness is on a Bluetooth headset. Now, we don’t know if this is officially licensed Gaga gear or not, and there are plenty of other wild designs to choose from (though this is obviously the eyecatcher of the collection). This bad boy supports Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, and uses an internal rechargeable lithium polymer battery with around eight hours of talk time. They’re available now for around $60. So our only question is: how long until Gaga gets a giant Bluetooth made out of her hair?

The fate of the mighty HTC HD2 seems to be getting murkier by the minute: Microsoft UK VP Alex Reeve said last week that an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 Series might be left up to hardware partners , but now Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft's Asia Pacific Mobile Communications Business says the 1GHz handset "doesn't qualify because it doesn't have the three buttons" required by WP7.
The fate of the mighty HTC HD2 seems to be getting murkier by the minute: Microsoft UK VP Alex Reeve said last week that an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 Series might be left up to hardware partners, but now Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Asia Pacific Mobile Communications Business says the 1GHz handset “doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons” required by WP7. Making matters even less clear, we asked Microsoft’s Director of Consumer Experiences Aaron Woodman about the HD2 directly on The Engadget Show, and he said he wasn’t “going to tell” us about the device’s upgradability, and that WP7′s final required specs would be revealed at MIX ’10. We’ll be honest: we’re taking all this confusion to mean that Microsoft hasn’t quite figured out how to say the HD2 is at a dead end just before it launches on T-Mobile US, but hey — maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised at MIX.
