Open Handset Alliance member confirms Android 2.3 is Gingerbread, coming soon to Nexus One
For an "Open" Handset Alliance , Google has been keeping its cards rather close to its chest when it comes to the oft-discussed Gingerbread flavor of Android , specifically whether it would be another point release or could it be spicy enough to knock us up to 3.0.

Microsoft loosens up, enables Windows Phone 7 apps to run beneath screen lock
We felt that Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was a product that would be perpetually evaluated, tweaked and overhauled as time went on, and sure enough, we're already seeing those winds of change blow yonder. Reportedly, Microsoft has now removed the restriction that prevented developers from writing applications that would continue to operate behind a locked screen (without a user's explicit permission, anyway), enabling a whole host of apps to breathe in a manner in which they simply should.

Adobe AIR runtime for Android lands, apps already starting to follow
We've been looking forward to this for a while , and now it's here: Adobe AIR runtime for Android. That means developers using Flash Builder or Flash Professional CS5 can publish AIR apps directly to the Android Market, and all users will need is this little runtime from the Market and they're set. AIR's desktop-oriented .air packages aren't compatible, so you can't just go and grab anything, but there are AIR apps already starting to pop up -- AppBrain has a whole list of them in one of the source links below -- since Adobe has been trialling this with developers for a little while now

Qualcomm launches augmented reality SDK in beta form, ready to rock your Android devices
By now you would've come across at least a handful of inspiring augmented reality apps (with a few exceptions , perhaps), and if you fancy having a go at coding one yourself, Qualcomm may be able to assist. Today, the giant chip maker is pushing out a beta release of its Android AR SDK, which has produced interesting demos like the digital photo frame concept showcased in London last month, as well as the Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots game pictured above. In fact, Mattel's so confident with the latter app that it's planning on commercializing it, so who knows -- you could be the next Peter Molyneux of the AR scene, or at least a winner of up to $125,000 from Qualcomm's AR Developer Challenge.

BlackBerry 9670 series clamshell earns FCC love
At first, we thought we were looking at the back of yet another standard design Bold or Curve -- but check out that nice, fat hinge up top. Indeed, we have every reason to believe we're looking at the long-rumored BlackBerry 9670 clamshell here, and the test reports confirm the presence of 802.11b / g / n and dual-band CDMA in this particular version -- in other words, it'll almost certainly be coming to either Sprint or Verizon

Nokia’s Qt 4.7 app framework goes gold, encourages Symbian and MeeGo development for fun and profit
Qt forms the backbone of Nokia's multi-platform strategy, linking Symbian and MeeGo under a common framework that it hopes will prevent the developer community from fragmenting and allow MeeGo to freeload a bit off Symbian's massive popularity in the global market. To that end, the latest release -- 4.7 -- is a pretty big deal, both in terms of new functionality and timing since MeeGo and Symbian^3 devices are both just around the corner. The biggest change is the addition of a new UI definition framework, Qt Quick, that includes both a new script-based language for describing user interfaces and a drag-and-drop environment for whipping them up
