Official Froyo update for Samsung Intercept going awry, Sprint investigating; unofficial fix available for now
Samsung's really struggling to release solid Android firmware updates, as evidenced by the Bell Vibrant situation -- and now, this little mess. Sounds like some Intercepts on Sprint are dying after applying the official update to Android 2.2 released a few days ago, prompting Sprint to put out an official statement today: " It has been brought to our attention that some customers may be experiencing issues with the Android 2.2 (Froyo) software upgrade for the Samsung Intercept. Some users have reported their device to be unresponsive after the upgrade is completed.

Android 2.2 hitting unbranded HTC Legends ‘in the coming weeks,’ carrier versions have ‘a slightly longer wait’
If you've got a Legend , fiddling with that gorgeous unibody aluminum shell in your hands is only going to keep you entertained for so long -- at some point, you're going to want Android 2.2 . Well, it took a little while -- as skinned phones tend to -- but HTC has announced via its Facebook page in the past few days that the phone will start getting Froyo "in the coming weeks." First up will be unbranded devices, while carrier-stamped versions will have to wait a little longer because, as HTC explains, there's an additional approval process that has to happen for each of those

YouTube app gets refreshed for Android, Eclair users need not apply
In case you didn't already figure this out from the Gmail or Maps apps, Google's definitely getting into this whole separate-the-apps-from-the-platform thing -- and the latest to join the party is Android's in-built YouTube player. The updated version has been live for a few days in the Market now, though only Android 2.2 devices are getting in on the fun; the Android 2.1 riffraff is getting left out in the cold this time around, which notably means the lion's share of Galaxy S users aren't able to benefit just yet. That said, the new version seems like a nice boost with the addition of a portrait viewing mode, perfect for those times when you're too lazy to rotate your phone 90 degrees counter-clockwise (trust us, we've been there).

T-Mobile G2 pre-orders starting tomorrow for current customers, it seems
T-Mobile has had a longstanding tradition of giving current customers first dibs on pre-orders for hot products, and it looks like the upcoming G2 will be no exception. TmoNews has a rather telling screen shot suggesting that T-Mobile subscribers will be able to sign up for the Android-powered QWERTY slider starting tomorrow through October 4, with retail availability following a couple days later on the 6th; we've already had that date on lock through Best Buy Mobile, so it comes as no surprise

Samsung Mobile Spain pegs Galaxy S update for late October
Samsung's indicated in the past that all versions of its ubiquitous Galaxy S would be getting Froyo upgrades in harmony (more or less) -- and it had also indicated that those updates would be happening in September . Well, you know how these things tend to go: plans change, bugs crop up, engineers go on vacation at inopportune times, and delays happen. On that note, Samsung Mobile's Spanish division is now saying that the Galaxy S will be getting Froyo in "late October" through the Kies desktop app, though we don't know whether Espa

HTC beginning Froyo rollout tomorrow? Maybe, maybe not
HTC Europe spokesperson Mark Moons caused quite a stir this morning when he tweeted that the company would begin rolling out Android Froyo updates to devices tomorrow, starting with the Desire , but we wouldn't get too excited yet -- HTC tells us that it's possible a rollout will begin tomorrow, but nothing's finalized yet pending some final testing. We've certainly got our fingers crossed -- and we're sure Desire owners the world over will be hitting that System Updates button nonstop for the next few days. Opera Mini 5.1 finds its way to Android, too
Just a scant few days after the Java-based release for featurephones , the Android build of Opera Mini 5.1 (which, admittedly, also has its roots in Java) is ready for your browse-happy ways. As with the featurephone release, the focus here is almost exclusively on improving performance, an impressive goal considering that Opera Mini 5 was already burning rubber on many devices. Additionally, 5.1 is said to improve page layout on the latest round of high-resolution phones -- a good thing, considering many of us are now considering WVGA a bare minimum
