Verizon trials Home Phone Connect, turns your landline into a cellphone
We're aware of a few third-party products that pull off this trick by connecting to your cellphone via Bluetooth, but Verizon's throwing weight behind its own system called Home Phone Connect that'll connect your home phone into its wireless network. The system -- which seems to be available only to residents of New York and Connecticut at the moment -- includes some sort of base station that connects to Verizon's network on one end and your existing landline on the other; T-Mobile's now-defunct @Home service was similar, but used your internet connection to route the calls rather than the cellular airwaves. Subscribers pay $9.99 to add the landline to a Verizon family plan or $19.99 to grant it unlimited domestic minutes, which seems poised to cut into Verizon's legacy landline business just as much (if not more) than the unique Hub unit that got killed off a while back

HTC Mondrian render teases AT&T U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7, looks fatter than last time
Not that the connection between AT&T and HTC's Mondrian WP7 handset was under much doubt anymore , but here's the first image purporting to show the carrier-branded version of the device. The render is provided by 911sniper , whose long and distinguished record of leaking legit HTC ROMs leads us to believe it is indeed the real deal.

Sprint lights up WiMAX in San Francisco
Well girls and boys, if you're in San Francisco, today's your lucky day! It looks like Sprint has finally switched on its WiMAX 4G network in the city by the bay, so whip out your Sprint Overdrive , EVO 4G , or Epic 4G and join the party. We've tested connection speeds using the Epic 4G in Potrero Hill and are seeing between 5 and 7 (!) Mbps down and 1.2 Mbps up with 6 full bars of signal indoors. Even after moving 4 blocks away, download speeds stayed between 2 and 4 Mbps, with the signal dropping to 4 bars, so it appears we've finally reached the realm of "ludicrous speed" on mobile devices

Huawei’s E583C mobile hotspot: looks so good, you’ll wish it weren’t portable
Okay, so maybe that's a stretch, but there's no question that Huawei's newest mobile hotspot is indeed a looker . Blessed with a silver and black motif as well as a subtle 1-inch color OLED for providing status information at a glance, the new E583C follows in the footsteps of the E585 and Vodafone's R201 . Functionally, it's fairly predictable, offering a 3.5G HSPA connection to up to five devices over WiFi and a sixth via a direct USB connection.

Intel demos Android 2.1 on Moorestown smartphone (video)
Intel's barking up all kinds of trees (ones planted by Qualcomm , NVIDIA and ARM ) with its Moorestown Atom platform, and while it'll be quite some time before we see an Atom Inside sticker gracing the face of a smartphone, the company's making sure the world sees what it has ramped up so far with reference builds here in Taipei. Aava Mobile was kind enough to build a number of prototypes for Intel to showcase at Computex , and while the vast majority were running Moblin, a couple were humming along with Android 2.1 underneath. We were able to get our hands around one here at the show, and while performance seemed decent enough, it certainly didn't floor us any more than a 1GHz Snapdragon has in the past.

AirStash brings the WiFi, neglects the storage, for a cent under $100
When we last saw the AirStash , it was keeping its mystique about it and refusing to disclose any salient details beyond the fact that it'll function as a wireless SD/SDHC card reader. Today, the fog of war is lifted with the news that the AirStash is now officially on sale for $99.99, and will come with a battery good for five hours of continuous data streaming.
