Confirming our FCC-inspired conjecture, here we have a gallery of pictures giving us a detailed look at Motorola’s latest (though probably not greatest) Android handset. Just as we posited, this QWERTY slider is bound for AT&T’s airwaves and it comes with a Motoblur 2 skin, as seen most recently on the Droid X. We keep telling these manufacturers that bone stock Android and a rapid upgrade cycle would be preferable but they don’t listen. You’ll have to make do with Android 2.1 when the Sage launches, which can’t be too far off from now given that our tipster has had his test unit for a good month already.

[Thanks, Charlie W.]

We tend to go into full-on conjecture mode when we see an interesting FCC filing, but our instincts haven’t let us down in the past, so allow us to throw something out on the table. A new Motorola just hit the feds with 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, quadband EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth, AGPS, and a digital compass. In other words, this is definitely an Android set, and it could definitely work on AT&T. The Backflip’s already looking plenty long in the tooth, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see Moto fire its second Google-powered volley on AT&T before too long — it’s certainly been doing its duties on Verizon (and to a lesser extent, T-Mobile) after all. Any thoughts on what wild form factor this one might be?

Alright, pardon our conjecture here, but we think we’re on to something. A Motorola just flew through FCC certification with ID IHDP56KV1 and model name “i1″ featuring iDEN plus Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi — in other words, this’ll almost certainly be coming to Sprint Direct Connect. Remember that rumored Opus One with Android for iDEN? Yeah, well, “i1″ is a pretty notable, stand-out model name if you ask us — and it’s not every day that you see an iDEN device with WiFi, suggesting this’ll be a smartphone. Do a little hand-waving and liberal dot-connecting and you have a reasonable assumption that the Opus One will be coming to market as the i1 — and with FCC certification under their belt, Moto might introduce it sooner rather than later. CTIA later this month, perhaps?

The article also states that other publishing companies have been in talks with Cupertino HQ. That jibes with what we’ve heard through the grapevine, specifically with Time Inc. property Sports Illustrated, and fits comfortably well with the New York Times conjecture from earlier today. E-book readers are all the rage these days, but like we said just after CES, we’d wager the future of the medium integrated into slates to provide rich, color multimedia presentations. Seems someone might be sharing in our perspective, but of course, this is just one of many, many, many Apple rumors we expect to see in the buildup to next week.

WSJ: Apple and HarperCollins negotiating e-book deal for tablet originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 19:35:00 EST.
