Confirmed: Windows Mobile 6.5 to become Windows Phone Starter Edition

Windows Phone 7 Series might have been the big news out of Mobile World Congress this year, but it looks like Windows Mobile 6.5 will live on as the basis of Windows Phone Starter Edition. We'd already heard some whispers to that effect, but now it's been confirmed by ZDNet 's Mary Jo Foley, who got some answers about the stripped-down mobile OS directly from Redmond.

Adéu, Barcelona: MWC 2010 draws to a close

For the industry, the press, and phone geeks alike, the GSMA's Mobile World Congress in the lovely Catalonian capital of Barcelona is the biggest event of the year -- and apart from a few unplanned power outages at Engadget's home base, an average nightly rest hovering around three hours, and unseasonably cold weather, 2010's gathering didn't disappoint. Let's take a quick look back at some of the highlights: Windows Phone 7 Series coverage Windows Phone 7 Series: that's the name Live from Microsoft's Windows Phone press event at MWC 2010 Windows Phone 7 Series hands-on and impressions (updated with video) Editorial: Engadget on Windows Phone 7 Series Windows Phone 7 Series: everything you ever wanted to know Liveblogs Live from Samsung's 2010 MWC press event Live from Sony Ericsson's MWC 2010 press conference Live from Nokia's (and Intel's) MWC 2010 press event Live from Microsoft's Windows Phone press event at MWC 2010 Live from HTC's MWC 2010 press event Live from Eric Schmidt's keynote at MWC 2010 Hands-ons Aava Mobile's Intel Moorestown prototype hands-on Acer Liquid e, beTouch E110 / E400, and neoTouch P300 / P400 hands-on Alcatel OT-980 with Android hands-on, we feel frugal just looking at it Bug Labs' BUGbase 2.0 prototype hands-on Chumby prototype with Marvell innards spotted at MWC 2010 Garmin-Asus Nuvifone M10 and A50 hands-on General Mobile's Touch Stone: how can something so wrong be so right?

Opera Mini on iPhone is fast, but why?

Live from Eric Schmidt’s keynote at MWC 2010

We've just been ushered into the rather gigantic Auditorium 1 of Hall 5 at Mobile World Congress 2010 where we're awaiting none other than Google chief Eric Schmidt to take the stage. What's in store -- Buzz news?

HTC HD mini launched at MWC

It seems mini versions of larger and pricier sets that still deliver the goods have become de rigeur amongst hardware manufacturers at MWC in 2010. Enter HTC's HD mini, a scaled down version of the beefy HTC HD2 with a 3.2-inch HVGA display for customers who want all the joys that device delivers without the need to actually use the beast itself -- or find somewhere to store it. The housing design is typical HTC beautiful, but in a very unique departure, the fasteners used to hold the device together are exposed and become part of its style

Acer launches neoTouch P300 / P400, beTouch E110 / E400 smartphones

If you thought the (admittedly weak) Liquid e was all Acer had in store for Mobile World Congress, you'd be badly mistaken. We've got a foursome of other smartphones on tap, so we won't waste any time breaking 'em down. Up first is the neoTouch P300 and neoTouch P400, each of which ship with Windows Mobile 6.5.3

Engadget is live from MWC 2010!

That's right, we just arrived in Barcelona fattened up on airline food and as rested as 8 hours of recirculated oxygen consumed at a 30-degree incline can provide. Weary? No way, we're staring Mobile World Congress 2010 in the face, and if you're a smartphone nerd (and really, what modern gadget fan isn't?) then this is the event that will reveal our future handheld device purchases

Intel to be part of Nokia’s MWC press conference — a new Booklet, or something more?

Well, this is interesting -- Intel just sent us an invitation to Nokia's press event at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week. We're told that the two companies will update us on the "latest developments" from their relatively new relationship , before Nokia launches into its solo presser directly afterwards. That could mean pretty much anything from a ho-hum Atom N450 refresh of the Booklet 3G to a fire-breathing Moorestown Maemo 5 phone , so we're obviously extremely curious to see what goes down -- our money is on the more conservative side of things, since we're thinking Intel just wants to have a presence at MWC, but we do love to be surprised.
