Visa rolling out payWave mobile phone payments in NY subway and taxis
DeviceFidelity's mobile twist on Visa's payWave system is a nice little solution to the fact that nobody's bothered to build contactless payment chips into US mobile phones just yet -- DeviceFidelity just stuffs the Visa smart chip circuitry into a microSD card and lets you on your way. Of course, this supplants the much needed additional storage on an Android handset, and requires a chunky add-on case for the iPhone, but at least it's a start. Visa will now start allowing those payWave-enabled devices to make contactless payments at subway turnstiles and taxi backseats in New York City as part of a new trial for the tech

Clear WiMAX is live in New York City (updated: semi-live)
Sprint and Clearwire's WiMAX service has been making occasional cameos throughout the five boroughs since at least June, but now it's official: the service has been launched, closing up one of the most conspicuous holes in coverage so far. This matches up nicely with the San Francisco go-live we reported on earlier today, so you'll now be able to take your red eye from the Big Apple to the City by the Bay without fear that your EVO's going to get slow when you go wheels-down. Plans run from $25 a month (for the iSpot ) all the way up to $55 for a mixed-mode WiMAX and EV-DO data stick, which works out to somewhere between 0.00001 and 0.0003 percent of your housing costs in Manhattan

AT&T says New York 850MHz 3G upgrade is complete, voice quality improved 47 percent
AT&T's service in New York City has long been decried as some of the worst in the nation -- we've heard people claim 30 percent of iPhone calls drop on average -- but hopefully things are about to get a lot better, as Ma Bell's just finished its 850MHz 3G upgrade in the city. That means the carrier should have more capacity in all five boroughs, and we're told voice quality has improved 47 percent since last quarter

Stream sits still for the camera, shows off its camcorder abilities (video)
In these halcyon days of impromptu Vietnamese gadget reveals, it should come as no surprise that Acer's Stream has gone from FCC filing to hands-on honey in a few days flat. Now it's been the subject of a rather more thorough photo shoot in Ho Chi Minh City, and also was kind enough to share a little footage filmed from its five megapixel camera.

T-Mobile rolls out HSPA+ throughout Northeast, dares to say it offers ’4G speeds’
With New York City proper under its belt , T-Mobile is turning its attention to much of the remainder of the nation's Northeast to be blessed with 21Mbps (theoretically, anyway) HSPA+ service. Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, much of Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island have all now gotten their switch flipped, with Boston and Washington, DC going live "in the coming weeks." The most interesting bit, though, might be the opening volley of T-Mobile's press release (which you can find after the break): "4G Speeds." With Sprint pimping WiMAX hard than ever and Verizon's first LTE markets coming any week now, it makes sense that T-Mobile would want to go on the offensive here -- but since both of those legit 4G techs can scale to higher speeds than HSPA can, it'll be interesting to see for how long the argument holds up.
