Motorola launching 20-30 Android phones in 2010

Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola's DEXT launch in Singapore today -- CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto's Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010.

Samsung Apps coming to four more countries

The mobile component of Samsung's app download portal, Samsung Apps , is taking a bold leap this month into four more territories: Singapore, Germany, Brazil, and China. Users of the Omnia II and Omnia Lite in those parts can download the Apps installer from Sammy's site, setting up a one-stop shop on the phone for game downloads (well, not just games, but there are a lot of games in there) over 3G and WiFi connections -- heck, even 2G connections will apparently work, which probably explains why they're going to effectively be able to take it to China right now.

Motorola China has a bunch of smartphones on tap this year

China is one of Motorola's last safe havens for Windows Mobile-powered devices , but even the Far East is falling to the inevitable onslaught of little green robots -- one need look no further than the XT701, MT710, and XT800 for evidence of that. That leads us to believe that the company's 2010 haul of smartphones for China will be primarily Android-based -- particularly in light of China Mobile's commitment to it through Open Mobile System -- expanding on comments in Korea this week by Moto's GM of the mobile devices business that there will "probably another four or five [smartphones] later" in the region following the recent announcements of the MT710 and XT800 and the upcoming launch of the XT701. Considering that China continues to be a stronghold for Moto, we're not surprised to see so much of the company's product R&D dollars go that way -- as long as the rest of the world ends up getting some trickle-down benefit, of course.

Bell Labs spearheads Green Touch initiative to improve network energy efficiency

Normally we might not cover the formation of a new consortium with ridiculously lofty goals like this, but check it: Bell Labs has managed to corral a who's-who of carriers, universities, government agencies, and industry labs with the goal of making communications networks more energy efficient than they are today. What makes the goal so lofty, though, is the fact that Bell wants to improve efficiency by a whopping 1,000 times -- a number it says should be possible based on research it has done suggesting a 10,000-fold improvement is theoretically possible. Heavy-hitting members include China Mobile (the world's largest carrier), AT&T, Swisscom, Telefonica, MIT, Stanford, Freescale, and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, so we're feeling good about the plausibility of Green Touch's first proposed milestone: a reference architecture and sample components within five years capable of meeting the 1,000-fold improvement mark.

Dell divulges Mini 3 details, tablet (Mini 5?) caught running Android 1.6 (update: video!)

We just got out of Dell 's mobile roundtable, and despite an extended tangent on China's phone market, we did manage to get some details on its AT&T-bound Mini 3 and yet-to-be-officially titled " Streak " tablet. Let's get down to brass tacks here: the Mini 3's been customized with ActiveSync for our own (corporate) email systems. There is Android market, but for future reference, that's always going to be up to the carrier

Dell Mini 3 headed to AT&T running Android

We've already seen it in China and Brazil, now Dell's first modern smartphone -- the Mini 3 -- is headed to the US in the loving arms of AT&T 3G. We expect the specs to remain pretty much the same: 3.5-inch 640x360 display, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel auto-focus camera with flash, microSD, and GPS, though we'll have to wait to get that confirmed.
