So we’ve got a crazy theory here: Slashgear just got a couple closeup shots of some heretofore-unknown HTC. So did we — one in common with Slashgear, one different. Could it be that Taiwan’s finest are “leaking” us these shots in an effort to drum up interest going into CES in a couple weeks? We wouldn’t doubt it in the least — with the LG B, Optimus 2X, and Samsung Nexus S all fresh off the presses, HTC probably wouldn’t mind getting a little boost in mindshare right now, and there’s no better way to do it than by teasing a phone that looks an awful lot like the previously-leaked Mecha. As a refresher, the Mecha is the beast that might end up on Verizon as the Incredible HD, offering LTE compatibility for the carrier’s new 4G network — and we know that Verizon plans on showing a whole bunch of LTE devices at CES, so this is all lining up pretty nicely. Follow the break for the other shot we received along with Slashgear‘s.

We’ve already seen what’s purported to be the HTC Knight show up in Sprint’s database under the guise of the HTC A7373, and we now have yet another model name thrown into the mix courtesy of this supposedly legitimate shot of Best Buy’s data transfer system. As you can see, what’s clearly labeled as the HTC Knight is now sporting the PG0610 designation (previously seen at the FCC), and it’s chilling alongside the HTC EVO 4G, which certainly makes sense — although it’s less clear what the ancient HTC Apache is doing there. For those that haven’t been keeping track, this is the same phone that’s also been known as the EVO Shift 4G and the Speedy, one of which may or may not be the device’s actual name when it’s finally, officially launched — hopefully at CES next month.

Notice how we said "hardware," not "phones?" In light of that wild Motorola teaser we just saw and the fact that we know Verizon and Moto are working pretty closely on Android tablets , it's entirely possible that phones won't be the only items on Verizon's docket when it starts pulling the covers off its first consumer-oriented LTE gear at CES in a couple weeks. The fact that there'll be new LTE hardware intros from Verizon at CES is nothing new -- they've been saying as much for a while now -- but the specific mention of Android is a comforting confirmation that we'll probably see the HTC Mecha , that unnamed LG , and perhaps a tablet or two on hand as opposed to MetroPCS' unusual strategy of taking the dumbphone route .

Look, we’ll be honest: the idea of an X10 mini running dumbphone software never really appealed to us from the start, so the news that it’s apparently been delayed into 2011 doesn’t elicit much of a reaction from anyone here at Engadget HQ. The Walkman-branded Yendo is currently targeting February to be specific, which would put it well past CES and pit it against what is likely to be a strong lineup of announcements at Mobile World Congress in the middle of the month, so we’re thinking there isn’t much retail traction in its future. And hey, in this cutesy, diminutive form factor, the keyboard-equipped X10 mini pro is where it’s at anyway.

We smell a Hasbro lawsuit coming with this one, but for now AutoBot is a funky name for a potentially great iPhone and Android app. Working in concert with a Bluetooth OBD-II dongle (not unlike the Superchips Vivid), it lets you diagnose engine troubles, keep track of maintenance, and locate your car via GPS coordinates — useful for when some Decepticon tries to make off with your ride or when you’re simply running low on energon and can’t remember where you parked. It can even be configured to automatically send a text to loved ones should you get into an accident, specifying your GPS coordinates and ruining any hope of hitting the body shop before dad finds out. The Mavizon-developed app recently won a startup competition at i-Stage 2010 and sadly isn’t slated to be available until 2012, but we should be getting an early look at CES. When it does ship it’ll cost $300 for the hardware and the software, though an extra fee will be required if you want to banish pop-up ads back to Cybertron.

When you keynote one of the biggest consumer electronics trade shows of the year, it’s usually a Big Deal — and you’re also plainly aware that when you step up on that stage, your audience (read: us) is fully expecting you to unveil something new and awesome. On that note, we’re intrigued to hear that Verizon Communications’ Ivan Seidenberg has been selected to do the honors for the opening address at CES 2011 next January. The press release — which you can find after the break — says that Seidenberg will “highlight [the] company’s vision for its LTE 4G wireless technology,” so we’d expect those LTE handsets expected early next year to factor prominently into the equation; of course, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a tablet or two, either. In the wake of Ballmer’s milquetoast showing at the 2010 show, the pressure’s definitely on to deliver a rousing address. Oh, and Ivan? If Ralph de la Vega says “break a leg,” he might mean it quite literally, so watch your step.

We have word from an industry insider that the First Else handset running the ALP OS is in trouble. Not a surprise since Emblaze, the company behind the handset, has been dead quiet about Else ever since CES where it promised a March beta and Q2 launch. From what we hear, the software simply isn’t ready and Emblaze has been unable to sign on any major carriers as the components continue to age inside a cellphone first demonstrated in November of 2009.

We’ve also been told that Emblaze has instructed its employees not to speak to the press about First Else. And indeed, when we called the number that formerly belonged to the Emblaze Mobile marketing manager we were greeted with a very casual “hello” without any mention of the company or the person with whom we were speaking. After confirming that we were indeed speaking with Emblaze Mobile, we related the news about First Else and were promptly transfered to the voicemail of Emblaze’s legal representation. Curious don’t you think? Your move Emblaze.

When we last saw the AirStash, it was keeping its mystique about it and refusing to disclose any salient details beyond the fact that it’ll function as a wireless SD/SDHC card reader. Today, the fog of war is lifted with the news that the AirStash is now officially on sale for $99.99, and will come with a battery good for five hours of continuous data streaming. Marketed primarily at iPhone OS devices, it creates a wireless network that allows any WiFi and browser-equipped computer to access the storage cards within it. The UI is built around HTML5 and recharging is done via a USB connection, which also turns the AirStash into a simple SDHC card adapter when plugged in. Check out our hands-on with it from CES over here and look for a full review coming up shortly. We do care so very deeply our portable storage.

We already caught a fair amount of play time with Inbrics’ Android-based M1 at CES, but it looks as if the company is fixing to “officially” reveal it next week at Mobile World Congress. We’re still debating whether or not this thing is a bona fide smartphone or yet another MID that’ll have a tough time gaining acceptance in this cruel, cruel world, but either way, it’s apparently on track for release later this year. According to details scooped up by Pocket-lint, the company is hoping that the M1 will double as a media controller for AV junkies, and if all goes well, Europeans could get their hands on it “in 2010 or early 2011.” Just as long as it’s prior to 2012, we’re cool.

RIM has an interesting reputation in the trade show world: it rarely makes any announcements of interest or consequence during events, but if you look hard enough, you still might just find something juicy. Last year’s CES, for example, briefly saw a Curve 8900 mysteriously running AT&T-branded firmware, which we now know foretold a release several months later. This year’s shindig in Vegas proved to be a little less bombastic — or so we thought, anyway, until a dude cleaning out his camera’s memory card noticed that Case-Mate (of all companies) allegedly had an unannounced Curve 8910 chilling in its booth. It’s pretty common for manufacturers to give valued accessory partners some prototypes ahead of time to make sure there are plenty of add-ons available by the time a device is released, they just don’t usually… you know, put those prototypes out at a booth for everyone to enjoy. We actually stopped by Case-Mate this year and didn’t catch the 8910, but we don’t know how long it was actually out — and besides, telling the difference between this and a Bold 9700 takes a Mike Lazaridis-like understanding for the subtle differences in RIM’s industrial design. Next year, though, be on notice, guys: we’ll be scanning your kiosks with a fine-tooth comb.
