UK and French carriers working on cellular coverage for Channel Tunnel, aim to finish by 2012 Olympics

If you live in a technophile city like Taipei, you’ll have been enjoying underground 4G for a long time now, but in London the rule is that you have to bid adieu to your mobile connectivity when diving into a tunnel. The city’s Mayor has been active in encouraging (forcing?) the major British carriers to install the necessary equipment to provide coverage on the Tube, and now we’re hearing that ambition has stretched beyond the nation’s borders as well. The Daily Telegraph reports that Vodafone, O2, Everything Everywhere, and Three from the UK along with Orange, SFR and Bouygues from France have agreed to share the cost of putting together a £20 million ($ 30.8m) project for making cellular coverage possible while traveling through the 31.4-mile Channel Tunnel between the two countries. The goal is to get things up and running by the Olympics in 2012, though we’ve no indication as to what speeds those wireless data transfers will reach. Still, having some bars is better than none, right?

Well, this should make the choice between a Messager Touch and a Mesmerize an easy one, right?

Page Plus Cellular adds annual prepaid plan: $80 a year for 2,000 minutes
Voice-only wireless customers who couldn't possibly care less about messaging or data probably aren't reading this site to hear the news, but if they were, they'd find out that prepaid carrier Page Plus Cellular has just added a pretty wild new plan that lets you pay $80 in exchange for 2,000 voice minutes that expire annually.

LG Optimus U hitting US Cellular on December 13th, free on contract
LG's well-received Optimus line of budget Android sets continues to expand, impress, and go gentle on wallets around the world -- and the latest to launch will come from US Cellular in the form of the Optimus U. First mentioned last month during the Apex's release , the phone hits next Monday, December 13th -- and once you take the mail-in rebate of $80 into account, you won't pay a dime for it on a new two-year contract.

Sprint and Clearwire deliver WiMAX to Los Angeles, Ohio, Miami and Washington DC, promise SF on December 28th
Seems like Sprint wants to get every last lick of 4G coverage in before Verizon flips the switch on LTE -- today, its joint venture with Clearwire is launching WiMAX in the City of Angels a day ahead of schedule . Lest you think Los Angeles is getting special treatment, five other cellular markets can now also get a taste of 5Mbps to 7Mbps download speeds, including Miami, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and our nation's capitol, Washington D.C. That brings the total number of regions where you'll get some mileage out of that $10 surcharge up to 68, in case you're keeping track.

Cellular South hooks up with Samsung for LTE network, two LTE-enabled phones next year
Regional carriers -- which historically haven't had the highest-tech networks around -- have been surprisingly quick to support LTE (heck, MetroPCS remains the only US carrier with a live network ), and now it's little Cellular South jumping on the bandwagon. Samsung sent out a press release a few days ago touting a new partnership to help Cellular South in its grand endeavor, supplying both infrastructure equipment and two LTE-compatible phones for a launch in 2011 with expanded availability in 2012 in the carrier's 700MHz spectrum.

Casemate’s iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation baking
As the everlasting debate rages on, and brains continue to / not to melt with every passing phone call, Casemate's taking no chances whatsoever. By collaborating with Pong -- a company that makes its ends by "protecting users of cellular telephones from the potentially harmful effects of radiation exposure" -- the Bounce was born. For all intents and purposes, it's a simplistic form-fitting iPhone 4 case (BlackBerry models are en route), available in a foursome of hues and tested to reduce normal cellphone radiation (SAR) by at least 60 percent.

LG Apex with Android and QWERTY hitting US Cellular this week for $80, Optimus U in December
Between the Desire , the Mesmerize , and the Galaxy Tab , US Cellular's already made it clear that they're pretty committed to Android , and the latest evidence of that comes this week in the form of the LG Apex. The QWERTY slider features a 3.2-inch display, 3 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, and Android 2.1 -- hopefully with a Froyo or Gingerbread upgrade in the works -- for $79.99, launching this Friday in US Cellular stores. Kind of looks a little bit like a keyboard-equipped version of the Optimus One , doesn't it?

US Cellular: LTE trial in late 2011, full deployment in 2012
Though fellow regional carrier MetroPCS has been arguably the most aggressive carrier in all of North America in getting LTE live , it looks like US Cellular is taking a slightly more laid-back approach. At a conference in New York today, USCC's CFO announced that they're looking at deploying one LTE test market in the latter part of 2011, moving on to a full-force launch in 2012.
