Sprint inks another three years’ worth of iDEN infrastructure support with Motorola, ‘several’ new phones coming in Q1

Even as Sprint starts to dream up ways to sunset its aging (but still popular) iDEN network , reclaim the spectrum, and migrate its push-to-talk customer base to something CDMA-based, there's still a network to maintain in the short term -- and to that end, the company has re-upped its contract with Motorola to keep the system in tip-top shape for at least another three years. Amazingly, this will mean that the network is some twenty years old by the time the agreement is up in 2013, after which they'll either need to be ready with their CDMA replacement (bearing in mind that QChat already failed) -- or we imagine they'll need another contract renewal. Oh, and this won't just be a run-out-the-clock situation, either: there'll be at least some new hardware, with Sprint saying that "several" handsets are on tap for the first quarter of 2011 including the i886 ("stylish," rugged, and landscape QWERTY) and the i686, an update of the i680 with improved waterproofing

Sprint: 4G tablet coming in 2011

We can't begin explain our exasperation at running a Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sprint's 3G , knowing full well the WiMAX airwaves floating just overhead could make our experience speedy. Thankfully, we won't have to dwell on our frustration for long, because a Sprint executive told Forbes that a 4G tablet will arrive in 2011.

Sprint lights up first 4G network in New York City, among other locales

We gave a fortunate sect of consumers a taste of WiMAX during our recent reader meetup in the Big Apple , but now it's available to all: as promised , Sprint has just went live with New York City's first 4G network. With the holiday sales season just around the bend, this honestly couldn't have come at a better time, and considering the bandwidth strain that hamstrings the city, it could very well make things easier on everyone if the adoption rate is high

Sprint fails to impress Wall Street with Q3 2010 earnings, still notches 644k net adds

Sprint certainly isn't out of the woods yet, but at least it's picking up customers from somewhere. The company's Q3 2010 earnings were ushered out today, and while its stock fell around ten percent on the news, a few silver linings were present. The carrier saw postpaid subscriber losses of 107,000, but that's an 87 percent improvement compared to Q3 2009.

HTC Merge / Lexicon prototype previewed, 800MHz processor produces sweet scores (video)

Here's a little something to make your weekend fly by -- Android Central scored a hands-on look at Verizon's dual-mode CDMA / GSM worldphone, the HTC Merge (or is that Lexikon ?) and it's looking like one hell of a handset. Though the prototype's Android 2.2 build is saddled with HTC Sense and Bing for search, the hardware's reportedly superb, with a "clicky and responsive and very well spaced" slide-out QWERTY keyboard with no Desire Z hinge nonsense , and a weighty, solid feel

Sprint Epic 4G update delayed by ‘administrative issues,’ consumer rage released on schedule

And this, folks, is a lesson of what not to do if you're a major carrier with a majorly perturbed user base. In a way, this sort of feels like the Instinct update debacle all over again, with users claiming that a promised software update was being held beyond the 30 day return window in order to keep contracts alive.

Sprint lays out strategy for iDEN sunset, refreshed CDMA network

CDMA2000 isn't getting any younger -- but it's a spring chicken compared to iDEN , a network that has remained the de facto standard for push-to-talk fanatics against all odds, surviving occasional challenges to the throne and Boost Mobile's desire to dip its toes in the CDMA waters from time to time over the past couple years.

HTC Lexikon shows up in leaked ROM update: is it the Merge for Verizon?

You might remember some discussion of the Lexikon about this time last month, a rumored Android piece from HTC sporting an 800MHz MSM7630 core, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.8-inch WVGA display, 4GB of onboard storage, Froyo with Sense, and a QWERTY keyboard. Sounds a little bit like the G2 / Desire Z , doesn't it? Indeed, those other models use Qualcomm's MSM7230 processor, the GSM version of the 7630 that'd be required for action on Verizon
