Sprint adds Boston, Daytona Beach and Providence to its 4G coverage map

Sprint's treating the East Coast to a shot of adrenaline-fueled mobile internet today, with Daytona Beach in Florida, Providence in Rhode Island, and Boston (you know the state, right?) all getting the green light for 4G activation. Notably, this takes the number of markets Sprint has now lit up in sexy WiMAX airwaves beyond 50 and ratchets up the states that have at least some coverage up to 21.

T-Mobile adds Boston, San Diego, Miami, others to HSPA+ live list

T-Mobile USA isn't backing down with its somewhat controversial "4G speeds" rhetoric for its rapidly-growing HSPA+ network -- and when you consider that real-world performance on it can meet or exceed what Clear and Sprint will get you in some markets on WiMAX , we can't say we blame them. Next to enjoy the 4G-esque experience from the nation's number four carrier are a few major markets -- Boston, San Diego, and Miami -- along with Erie, Pennsylvania, Fresno, Palm Springs, Richmond, Spokane, and Topeka. Though the G2 is lining up to be the carrier's first true HSPA+ smartphone, T-Mobile's quick to remind everyone that the upgrades also mean that over 15 current devices in its lineup will see some benefits as well; not "4G speeds," of course, but better than the HSPA they'd had before

OpenWays makes your smartphone a hotel room key, provides a different kind of ‘unlock’

For years now, hotel chains have been toying with alternative ways to letting patrons check-in, access their room and run up their bill with all-too-convenient in-room services. Marriott began testing smartphone check-ins way back in 2006, and select boutique locations (like The Plaza Hotel in New York and Boston's Nine Zero) have relied on RFID, iris scanners, biometric identifiers and all sorts of whiz-bang entry methods in order to make getting past a lock that much easier (or harder, depending on perspective). This month, InterContinental Hotels Group announced that they would soon be trialing OpenWays at Chicago's Holiday Inn Express Houston Downtown Convention Center, enabling iPhone owners to fire up an app and watch their room door open in a magical sort of way

T-Mobile rolls out HSPA+ throughout Northeast, dares to say it offers ’4G speeds’

With New York City proper under its belt , T-Mobile is turning its attention to much of the remainder of the nation's Northeast to be blessed with 21Mbps (theoretically, anyway) HSPA+ service. Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, much of Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island have all now gotten their switch flipped, with Boston and Washington, DC going live "in the coming weeks." The most interesting bit, though, might be the opening volley of T-Mobile's press release (which you can find after the break): "4G Speeds." With Sprint pimping WiMAX hard than ever and Verizon's first LTE markets coming any week now, it makes sense that T-Mobile would want to go on the offensive here -- but since both of those legit 4G techs can scale to higher speeds than HSPA can, it'll be interesting to see for how long the argument holds up. 4G shocker! The good people of Boston enjoy Verizon’s trial LTE network

You know what makes us happy? Pizza. But a close second has to be 4G technology, which makes us truly envy the Bostonians who were treated to a sample of Verizon's trial LTE deployment in the friendly confines of a downtown pizza joint last month.

Verizon ‘wrapping up’ Boston and Seattle trials, ‘friendly user’ ones coming this summer

Remember those LTE trials that Verizon Wireless started up in Boston and Seattle back in August of last year? Good news, mobile surfers -- the operator has today confirmed in a roundtable at CTIA that they're both nearing their end, giving us hope that they're gleaned the necessary information from them to start moving onto bigger and better things

Sprint promises ‘many’ new 4G markets in 2010; New York, SF included

With LTE onslaughts from Verizon and AT&T (not to mention countless carriers around the world) drawing near, Sprint's wasting no time beefing up its WiMAX network ahead of its competitors' 4G launches in an effort to give WiMAX the best chance it can. Without giving a hard figure, the company says that it expects to launch WiMAX service in "many" markets this year, with several notables among the lot: Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC are all called out by name
