Sure, companies haven’t had too much success with connected watches — remember SPOT? But don’t lose hope! The Fossil Connected watch concept shows that at least somebody is still trying to bring wrist-based chronometers into the 21st century. This timepiece is designed to pair with your Android or BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth to display weather, caller ID info, text messages, so on and so forth. And unlike a lot of the watches we see in this space, it actually looks pretty damn good. It remains to be seen exactly when these will make it to market (currently the company is hashing out the concept and “showing them around Silicon Valley,” according to Robert Scoble), but when they do they should sell for around $200. Get a closer look after the break.

The only way to open this editorial is to admit something I’ve been rather shy about on the pages of Engadget: I’ve been an avid BlackBerry fan and user for about six years now. I mean a real addict — the kind who wakes up each morning looking for a blinking red LED, the kind who’s refused to give up push email and BlackBerry Messenger in favor of more powerful, polished, and progressive mobile operating systems like iOS, Android, and webOS. In fact, when my Verizon contract was up last year I opted to get a Curve 8530 instead of the Motorola Droid or Palm Pre — to say nothing of making the leap over to AT&T for the iPhone.

There were lots of reasons I didn’t want to give up my BlackBerry, but five days ago I lost that very Curve in a San Fransisco cab. Then coincidentally, a day later I saw RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis speak at the D: Dive Into Mobile conference, where he almost embarrassingly avoided every question about the company’s immediate smartphone strategy. I had always known that RIM was behind the curve (always a great pun!), but I also always had hope that the company would catch up with modern smartphones of today. Sadly, watching Mike dodge questions on the D stage took that hope away from me — it’s crystal clear that RIM won’t have a solution to compete with those powerful smartphones anytime soon. So, what happens to a BlackBerry diehard like myself? Where do I go from here?

Discounts are raining down from the heavens these days as retailers try to offload old stock and do a bit of tidying up before rolling in the fresh batch of 2011 smartphones. Best Buy is keeping with this trend by treating its customers to a nice big saving on the AT&T-attached Dell Streak, offering it up for a mere $100 in upfront costs. The typical two-year commitment will be required from you, but that might just be worth it for this 5-inch Android slate, particularly if you load it up with the latest firmware. Pricing is the same for both the black and white versions, so if you’re keen to swap a small bulge in your wallet for a large protruding tabletphone in your pocket, you know where to look.

[Thanks, Jeremy C.]

Things just got a little more heated in the RIM / Kik dispute: RIM's now filed a Canadian patent infringement case against the company, just days after it pulled Kik Messenger from BlackBerry App World due to " breached contractual obligations. " We don't have the complaint yet, so we're not sure exactly what RIM's patent covers, but it's a fair bet to say it's likely messaging-related -- and it's probably a safer bet to say that RIM doesn't screw around when it comes to dealing with potential threats to BBM.
If the name UberTwitter sounds familiar, that’ll be because it’s one of the more popular mobile Twitter clients, accounting for 10 million tweets each day from BlackBerry users around the globe. And now it’s also available on the iPhone. Citing the “growing dominance” of Apple’s one-device-to-rule-them-all mobile platform, the UberTwitter crew has decided to expand its offering with a new open beta, which is available to download now. The major distinguishing feature being touted is something called UberView, which allows access to links within tweets without exiting the app or opening up a new window within it. Looks a pretty slick idea, but there are still some early issues to be ironed out — as with all beta iterations — and a final v1.0 should be ready to do battle with Twitter’s official app by the middle of December.

T-Mobile’s got an American lock on the Bold 9780 at the moment, but you know how it goes with BlackBerrys: they tend to go pretty much everywhere (Storm and Torch notably excepted) if you give ‘em enough time. Sure enough, an AT&T-branded version just popped up… and if you’ve got $899 lying around and an undying love for unreleased RIM gear, it can be yours. The phone’s chilling on eBay right now with a prominent AT&T logo silkscreened at the bottom; obviously, it stands to reason these guys would want to replace their Bold 9700 before too long, so we’re not surprised to see it go down like this. Want a white version, though? Well, you’ll just have to wait for that.

Dish Network took another step towards its ambitious TV Everywhere plans — not to be confused with Comcast’s and Time Warner’s TV Everywhere partnership — by releasing the Android version of its Dish remote access app late last week. This nicely completes the provider’s suite of mobile offerings, which have already been available on the iPhone, iPad and certain BlackBerry phones. The catch is that to take advantage of the app, Android users must own a Sling-enabled Dish device like the ViP 722 / 722k HD DVRs or the recently released Sling adapter. With the necessary hardware though, the app turns smartphones into a control freak’s best friend, working as a remote control, a DVR manager, and a Sling-powered media streamer to view recorded or live programming over Wi-Fi or 3G. That’s a pretty nifty feature set considering it costs a lovely low price of free, and it’s certainly more robust than mobile offerings from Comcast, Time Warner, or DirecTV. In other words, when it comes to getting the most from your your paid TV service while on the go, it appears the underdog satellite company can certainly dish it out.

Seems like Black Friday is nearly obsolete, doesn’t it? You know how it goes on Thanksgiving week these days: there’s no shortage of deals to be had from most of the wireless carriers in the country, but US Cellular’s angle here is a little different. Rather than doing limited-time discounts or buy-one, get-one-free offers on particular models, they’re going to flip you a $150 credit good toward your future bills when you add a line (or start a new individual plan) with a smartphone like the LG Apex, pictured, that just rolled out last week. After taxes and fees, that should give you roughly two months of free service if you pick the phone up alongside US Cellular’s newish Primary Plus plan that includes 450 minutes, unlimited messaging, and 5GB of data — enough to get you into 2011 without a bill. Should make enjoying your turkey just a little easier, we figure. The promo runs through next Monday, November 29; follow the break for the full press release.
