Meizu M9 christens site launch with full specs list
Meizu CEO Jack Wong has been teasing the M9 handset for some time now, and if we're not mistaken, the official site just went live with a full list of specs to boot. As promised , there's a 3.5-inch 960 x 640 resolution screen (reportedly the Sharp ASV display ), and we're also apparently looking at a 1GHz S5PC110 processor (just like the Samsung Galaxy S), Android 2.2, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, A-GPS, 802.11b/g/n, microSDHC, a removable 1370mAH lithium-polymer battery, and support for (drumroll, please) GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA,and HSUPA. Too good to be true

Peel turns your iPhone into a universal remote — using a wireless external IR blaster
The idea of using an iPhone or iPod touch as a universal remote has been tossed around for years, but it's always required either a finicky external dongle or an extravagantly expensive home automation rig . Instead, we've been treated to a host of single-device remote apps for everything from FiOS , DirecTV , Comcast , and Dish Network DVRs to the Apple TV to the Boxee Box to... well, you name it.

Nokia toys with context-aware smartphone settings switch, Jigsaw provides better context for apps like this
If Intel prognosticated correctly , context is the future of apps -- your device's array of sensors will determine where you are and what you're doing, and clever programs will guess from there. Problems arise, however, when one tries to run those accelerometers, microphones, radio antennas and GPS tracking devices constantly on the battery life of an average smartphone and determine what the raw data means, and that's where a group of Dartmouth researchers (and one Nokia scholar) are trying to stake their claim. They've got a bundle of algorithms called Jigsaw for iPhone and Symbian that claims to be able to continually report what you're up to (whether walking, running, cycling or driving) no matter where you place your device, and only pings the sensors as needed based on how active you are.

Samsung Continuum first hands-on
If surprise was the focus of the event, we'd say the Samsung Android-powered, Verizon-exclusive (and, alas, Bing-driven) Continuum reveal was a comedy of errors -- but who cares now that we've got our hands on the Galaxy S phone, secondary ticker and all. The Android buttons themselves, as it turns out, are on the display as well -- basically, it's one huge display

Nokia 5230 brutally overclocked to 800MHz
As overclocking hacks go, Nokia often takes a back seat to Windows Mobile and Android -- but why? In the year 2010, shouldn't we be showing these dusty 434MHz ARM11s some turbocharged mercy

Red and white official Droid Incredible backs shipping for $25
They're not showing up on Verizon's site at this point, but you can apparently score first-party replacement battery covers for your Droid Incredible -- not just in the original black, but also in decidedly louder red and white varieties. If you've got a buddy flaunting a white EVO , we can't think of anything better than fire engine red to get him to quiet down a bit -- only problem is you'll be asked to shell out a stiff $24.99 for the privilege. Word is they're available in stores now.

BBC crafts malicious smartphone app to prove a point… we guess
You may surmise that Auntie Beeb is only good for news distribution from across the pond, but as it turns out, the BBC is apparently giving at least a few of its employees a little of that oh-so-coveted " 20 percent time ." In an effort to prove just how easy it is to create a smartphone application that can gank all sorts of personal information, a staffer at the organization spent just a few weeks learning enough code to create a "crude game." In play, the app would gather contact information, copy text messages and log the phone's current location; afterwards, it would shoot all of that information to a specified email address, but not before putting a serious hurting on the battery. All told, the spyware took up around 250 lines of the 1,500 making up the whole program, and thankfully for us all, the BBC decided against submitting the program into any app stores. Phew.

Apple Peel 520 gets reviewed: turns your iPod touch into an iPhone, but quirks exist
No one expressly said that the Apple Peel 520 would change your life, but if you play your cards right, that's not entirely out of the question. The mysterious doodad -- which wraps around your iPod touch and holds an extended battery and SIM card -- has caused quite the stir since being revealed late last month, and now it has undergone a full review overseas. Put simply, the device does work as advertised, turning one's iPod touch into a device fully capable of making / receiving calls as well as texts.
