ComScore: Android jumps ahead of iOS in total US smartphone subscribers

We’ve seen plenty of data to show that Android is the hottest-selling smartphone OS among US buyers today, but now we have a stat point to show that it’s doing pretty well in cumulative terms as well. According to ComScore’s latest estimates, Android had 26 percent of all US smartphone subscribers in the quarter ending November 2010, bettering Apple’s iPhone for the first time. The major victim of Android’s ascendancy has actually been RIM’s BlackBerry, whose lead at the top contracted by 4.1 percentage points (nearly 11 percent less than the share it had in the previous quarter). Guess those Verizon iPhones and dual-core BBs had better start arriving pretty soon.

I currently have a motorola cliq running android 1.5.
Does the quality of the text to speech voices improve when the operating system is upgraded to 2.1?
Also, what is the best text to speech app? I DON’T need an app that reads your texts. I need a text to speech app that speaks what you type into the phone, because I’m non-verbal.

Option’s refreshed GTM601 / GTM609 module is the smallest with voice, HSPA, EV-DO, GPS, GLONASS, and alphabet soup
Besides a healthy consumer modem business, Option is one of the world’s big suppliers of cellular chipsets — and it just unleashed a particularly interesting one here at CES this week. No bigger than a postage stamp and about as thick as a nickel, the second-generation GTM601 and GTM609 is billed as the world’s smallest to support voice, GSM / HSPA, CDMA / EV-DO, GPS, and GLONASS, which stands to make your next phone design (assuming you are, in fact, designing a phone) more svelte and power-conscious than ever before… and as a bonus, it’ll work around the world with the world’s most popular 2G / 3G standards and frequencies. Follow the break for the full press release.

HTC EVO 4G Shift handled on video by Wirefly

Kind of unusual for a top-tier third-party retailer to beat everyone else (including the manufacturer and carrier) to the punch with a detailed live video of a new smartphone — but hey, really, who are we to complain? Wirefly has posted a nearly 10-minute introduction to the EVO 4G Shift that Sprint just made official this morning, comparing it to both an original EVO 4G and a Droid 2 so you can get a feel for the diminutive dimensions (relatively speaking, anyway). It looks pretty fast from the video, and the stock Quadrant score over 1,400 would seem to back up that impression — but naturally, we’re sure it can get even better with some careful ROM tweaking and a timely upgrade to Gingerbread. Follow the break for the full video.

Spriiing phone hits Smile Thailand, the way Sweden’s aid to China
Is there a Thai company, we never heard of just to make the best looking portrait QWERTY Android phone now? We can not have a head start fast – but it’s definitely there. Spriiing Design (yes, three i’s) to launch the model in Bangkok Smile January 18, and the rest of Thailand, after a 3-megapixel camera, 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM, 16GB microSD expansion, and 2.6-inch QVGA display with 3G support the 900 and 2100 bands paired with 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7225 core on top of Android 2.1. In other words … Yeah, it’s a pretty low-end price. More interestingly, however, the handset is apparently designed and manufactured by Huawei in Sweden – in fact it was “in connection with Ideos” screen-printed on the back, and Ideos is a sign that Huawei has pushed Android -powered gear this year’s. Small world, is not it? Follow the break Spriiing video teaser. />
Update: turns out, this puppy is on sale in Australia, including by Boost Mobile (yes, there’s Boost Mobile has). Thank you, Matt! />

iPhone alarm still does not work, the worlds crashing left and right
Hey, you – it was January 3 days. You know, the day should go back to work / school / life. And the day you should stick with the flight you booked for three months. And perhaps the day you should perform many other tasks. Unfortunately, you really believe that the iPhone exists in the alarm itself when rolled around today, but based on the hordes of complaints found on Twitter and Facebook, said correction is still hibernating. And so, you are still sleeping. Even here at Mobile Phone Street HQ, we saw the iPhone will not wake up to 4 handsets we were promised (a recurring alerts), so who knows when Apple will step up to the plate and deal with. In the meantime, go ahead and set up a recurring , lightly alarm threshold of fingers and toes. Or, you know, buy a battery-operated alarm clock away from your grandmother. />

Vizio reveals Via Tablet and Phone with Android, sub-$300 3DTVs ahead of CES (update: pic!)

Vizio made its name by packing high end features into value-priced HDTVs and it’s taking that mentality to new areas, revealing the tablet we spotted in last night’s Rose Bowl ad as the 8-inch Via Tablet and a 4-inch Via Phone. Both will be running Android and while CTO Matthew McRae didn’t spill any OS details to the Wall Street Journal, the combination of confirmed Market access and odd button configuration has us thinking Honeycomb is in the works when they are released this summer. The only Via Phone details mentioned are screen size and its front and 5MP rear cameras, while the tablet promises a “high resolution” screen, WiFi, three speakers, HDMI out and front facing camera — but no cellular service.
Expect TV manufacturers to be on their toes as well, since Vizio says it will bring 3DTVs to market that start at less than $ 300. The new mobile products will also tie into its TV business through the Via Plus internet service, which sounds a lot like Samsung Apps by allowing access to Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, Android market access (to go along with its new Google TVs) and even a new Vizio On Demand movie services across all of its devices. We’ll temper our excitement slightly remembering the new TVs and iPhone app shown off last year that never quite made it to shelves, but this trip to Vegas has already gotten even more interesting.
Update: Get a peek at the Via Tablet and Via Phone immediately above, and get a load of those front-facing cameras!
