i need help on my ps3 slim.

ok this is killing me. im trying to get a wired connection on my ps3 slim and i do everything it says but i cannot seem to get the internet connection. i can obtain the ip address but fail at the internet connection. i have a cable modem and my ISP is Wave Broadband. will i need a router to get my wired connection or wireless connection? the cable modem is Touchstone Telephony Modem. please explain the steps that i need to get an internet connection. i wonder though is it my ISP? is it my Cable Modem? is it my Computer? please help me this is driving me crazy.
